Microsoft PowerToys, a set of free utilities for Windows 10 users, has introduced a new feature allowing users to preview registry file contents before importing them.
Registry files contain instructions to modify the Windows registry, a database that stores system and application settings. Importing registry files can change various aspects of Windows behaviour, such as appearance, performance, security, and compatibility.
The new feature in PowerToys, Registry Preview, aims to make this process easier and safer.
It lets users view the contents of registry files in a graphical user interface (GUI) without opening them in a text editor or importing them directly. Users can also compare the registry file contents with the current registry values and see what changes will be made if they import the file.
The feature is currently in preview mode and is available in PowerToys version v69 or later. Users can enable it by going to PowerToys > Plugins > Registry Preview and turning on the toggle switch.
According to Microsoft, the feature is still under development and may have some bugs or limitations. The company welcomes feedback and suggestions from users on its GitHub page.
PowerToys is an open-source project that was revived by Microsoft in 2019 after being discontinued in 2010. It offers various tools to enhance Windows functionality and productivity, such as FancyZones, Color Picker, Image Resizer, Keyboard Manager, PowerRename, and more.

Wow, they finally released a PowerToy I find interesting. Do they give you a way to install just one PowerToy instead of all of them?

I have 5 laptops and have never been able to use 1 mouse 1 keyboard due to separate corporate VPNs. USB-C display was a godsend since I could plug in the mouse/keyboard dongles into the monitor, but still required switching out the main USB-C between laptops. If Powertoys is able to share one mouse and keyboard across VPNs (I.e., by using Bluetooth) , you will be hearing back from me. Well, I guess if it doesn’t work you’ll be still be hearing back from me. I guess creating this account just to post this comment was worth it. To be continued…
