Hi guys

As the title says..."Can you please explain what the following message means" And how do I fix it?. Every time I switch my PC on this message appears...

Failed to connect to a windows service

Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service. This problem prevents standard users from logging on to the system.

As an administrative user, you can review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn't respond.

So my question is:- Where is the problem, I am the administrater and I can log in and being as no other users standard or otherwise use my PC?.

Cheers

Mike

Hi Dalia

Thank you for your input, however, for your information, I have more than one computer. And each has a different operating system and I have no inclanation to have two the same.

Look at the System Event Log for the service that did not start.

Right Click Computer > Manage > Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System

Look for a Warning

Hi John

Thanks for that, I have been there and it is disabled. I tried to re-enable it or make it automatic. But it wouldn't let me.  This might be connected to a situation that I've been experiencing for the past few days. Whereby the cursor shoots to the bottom left corner of the desktop and gets stuck. This occurred everytime I tried to use the Snipping Tool. All I could do was reboot. So I got rid of the Snipping Tool and it stopped doing the cursor in the corner thing. But now this message appears everytime I turn on.

Quite possibly the easiest and perhaps only solution now, might be just to click the message off each time I boot.

Are you saying the Event log is disabled or you have a service

If you can login without a problem then simply closing out the error is probably the easiest thing to do.

See the following link for possible solutions.

Hi John thanks for hanging in here.

"Are you saying the Event log is disabled"

Yes, that is what it said.

However, the weird thing is I can access the Events Log and it is still functioning. So following the first  'Method' in your link this morning. I went back and checked again and was surprised to find that it said the following?...

System Event Notification Service - Monitors System - Started - Automatic - Local System?

Which would make us believe that it is fixed. But if that was true, why then did I get that same message at startup again this morning?.

Failed to connect to a windows service

Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service. This problem prevents standard users from logging on to the system.

As an administrative user, you can review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn't respond.

Yeah, that is strange. I don't have an answer for that. Doing a

sfc /scannow

at an elevated command prompt may find some system problem. I'm not good at reading any sfc logs though.

You might try a system restore from a restore date just before this problem started.

Because of the high number of abandoned threads, if there is no response after 3 days I remove the post from my answer list. If you wish further help after that PM me.

Hi John

As for doing an "sfc /scannow", over the past few months I seem to have been doing little else but use this go to method. Other than changing the 'MSConfig'. still thanks for you input, thoughts and links. If you come up with any more thoughts on this matter, please feel free to chip in. But read on...

Hi Ranchhand

In a perfect world, or at least one that could be a tad kinder to me, a little more often,  I could do a...

"system restore, just before this problem started".

Sadly though, all the breadcrumbs the world throws at me, tend to be carried away on the wind. Because, as for all my more recent backups, they have, or so I'm told by MS, become corrupt.

A glimmer of hope...

All might not be lost, for as of this morning, I switched my PC on, but had to leave the room before it booted up. When I returned the annoying message wasn't there!. But, I mustn't cheer too soon, it could have been and gone. Even though, prior to this event I had to click to remove it. But because latterly my PC has become slow to start, I'm not keen to turn it off and on again, to see if the message is there or gone. So, I plan to wait until tomorrow. I'll post my findings then.

Thanks Guys

Mike

Hi Guys

Sadly, yes it is still showing that same message this morning. I note that the message includes a picture of a padlock. Which when I hovered the mouse pointer over it, it tell me that it is from Windows Explorer. Which reminds me that on and off I do get brief messages that tell me that Window Explorer isn't working. I tend to just ignore it and it seems to sort itself out. Till the next time, which is few and far between.

Once again, I am now running 'sfc /scannow'. It always says it will take sometime. However, it never takes more than 20 minutes, when I'm expecting hours. Today it too exactly 20 minutes and says, as always...

"Did not find any integrity violations"

So, I am now checking out the link from Pkshadow.

Well it would seem that we have a conundrum. Pkshadows link relates to two 'non specified OS' updates. Which, although I don't see the connection to my problem?. But if you guys do then I'm game.

Now here I am...

The first update is, the 'Start Menu shortcut' and the second is the 'Taskbar shortcut'.

As instructed I clicked 'Start',  then typed 'Windows Explorer'. I am now instructed to 'right click' the 'Windows Explorer' icon. But and there's always a But and believe me when I tell you this is a really big BUT!?. The following is what I am looking at...

Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer

No your eyes aren't playing tricks, this really is what I saw.

Hi Mike,

please run KB947821..... make sure you run the correct version from the MS catalogue

then look at BlackVipers site to check what services can/should be running to ensure a stable working W7 install

Hi Torchwood

I went to the MS KB Catalogue put in KB947821 as you requested.

And of course omitted to..."make sure you run the correct version from the MS catalogue"

Which of course sent me completely in the wrong direction. I'm back on track now though and ready to give it another go
