I want to remove an existing external hard drive (M:) which I have already emptied. I then want to rename another external drive (D:) to M: to replace the original M:. Could someone kindly walk me through the procedure or link me to a how-to article?

This assumes Drive M is no longer attached to the computer. You can assign a new letter to the External drive D in Disk Management.

To safely remove an external drive, right-click the drive icon in the system tray (Windows) or Finder (Mac), and select "Eject" or "Safely Remove Hardware." Wait for the notification that it’s safe to remove the drive before unplugging it

Thanks to JAMES2526 and JohnC_21 for your comments. Following these suggestions, I have successfully removed M: drive and renamed its replacement. Thanks to you both for the assist.
