I dual boot Win 7x64 sp-1 alongside Win 10. I have a video that I have on the Win 7 side and used a USB to copy and to add to Win 10 partition. However, I cannot get it to play through Windows Media Player. I get this message:

The file has a .pptx extension

Help would be appreciated.

Don't know what I did but did not upload image just link.

I believe that .pptx is a proprietary file extension of Microsoft Powerpoint. If you have Powerpoint installed on your W10 drive it should play, unless it is corrupted. Windows Media Player will not recognize Powerpoint files since Powerpoint is not a video program. It comes with Microsoft Office suite.

Because of the high number of abandoned threads, if there is no response after 3 days I remove the post from my answer list. If you wish further help after that PM me.

@ranchhand_,

I misspoke initially. It is not a video but indeed is a montage of a celebration of life photos put together in a PowerPoint presentation. I guess I knew it was PowerPoint but it had not occurred to me to see if it is installed on Win 10. Will do so and report back. Thanks for the response.

Based on the error message you received, it seems that the video file you are trying to play requires a codec that is not installed on your computer. A codec is a piece of software that compresses and decompresses digital media files, such as videos, so that they can be played back on your computer.

There are a few things you can try to resolve this issue:
  1. Install a codec pack: One solution is to install a codec pack that includes the necessary codec for your video file. One popular codec pack is the K-Lite Codec Pack, which can be downloaded for free from their website.
  2. Convert the video file: Another solution is to convert the video file to a different format that is supported by Windows Media Player. There are many free video converters available online, such as Handbrake or Freemake Video Converter, that can do this.
  3. Use a different media player: If the above solutions do not work, you can try using a different media player that may already have the necessary codec installed. Some popular media players include VLC Media Player, Media Player Classic, and PotPlayer.
Hope this helps!
