Can anyone please help?

I am playing music into my LINE IN port on my laptop but it refuses to play out through the speakers. I've been into all sorts of settings and can't find the problem.

I know the computer is receiving the music because I can see the bouncy green bar in the volume settings, but why can't I hear anything?

Type mmsys.cpl in the Start Meny search box and press Enter.
Select Recording tab. Double click on Line In.
Choose Listen tab, check Listen to this device. Choose playback through Default playback device and click Apply button.
Choose Levels tab, turn on the speaker, select volume label etc.

EDIT: It is better if you install the manufacturer's sound software and drivers. I have Realtek HD and controlling sound settings is much easier through this.

Hi.

There is no LINE IN showing in the recording tab. All I have is Microphone & Stereo Mix showing. When I play through the Line In the microphone device is the one showing the sound. If this is the case, then how do I listen to microphone thru speakers?

I also have Realtek HD installed too but no Line IN showing there either.

Follow the previous instructions (in last post). After selecting Recording tab, right click anywhere on an empty area and select Show Disabled Devices
Choose Line In device, right click on it and select ENable

You should try re-installing device drivers. Get latest device driver for Realtek HD

I've already done that.

All it shows is Microphone & Stereo Mix.

I installed Realtek HD and it's made no difference.

I tried enabling both as default but still no sound coming out. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

OK...try this.

Sound icon.

Open Volume Control/Options/Properties.

Change the mixer device to...rear audio input.

Make sure that Line-In is enabled to show.

Put check mark at bottom of Line-In.

Close.

If "Line In" doesn't show up, try unplugging, plugging back in, and selecting "Line In" in the "What Did You Just Plug In?" dialog box (If you have Windows).

I know this is a bit dated, but stumbled across this and thought I'd try to help others. Try this:

  • Right Click the Volume Icon that's in the notification tray.
  • Click the Open Sound Settings option.
  • Click the Sound Control Panel link under Related Settings that should be to the right side of that window.
  • Click the Recording tab.
  • Double Click the Line In device to open its properties.
  • Click the Listen tab.
  • Click the checkbox for Listen to this device.
  • Click the Levels tab.
  • Adjust the volume level to your preference.
  • Click Apply/OK and close all the other windows that were opened.

Ray, and others, thanks for trying to help this still unresolved problem.  Like the original poster I have no "Line In" audio recording device listed in the recording tab, entering via either the Windows speaker icon or the Realtek HD Audio Manager speaker icon, and yes, with disabled and disconnected devices checked.  The only choices are Microphone [the built-in laptop mic], and Stereo Mixer, whatever that is.  Driver updated to the latest from Realtek.

ASUS equipped this machine with a combo headphone/microphone jack requiring our using a TRRS Male to 2 x TRS 3.5mm Female Audio/Microphone Break-Out Adapter.  This has allowed my connecting headphones and microphone or audio line in to the input jack.  Plugging that in opens the Audio Manager and offers the Headphone/Headset choice of device just plugged in.  I can hear my line input on the headphones but the microphone device level indicator does not modulate and the sound recorder runs but plays back a blank, silent .WAV file.  If I tap the built-in mic there is modulation and sound recorder records voice input to the internal mic.  Same results using DSC Decoder and RecordPad recording programs.

Has anyone fixed this yet on your systems?

Hi,

I had the same problem, no LINE IN displayed in the Recording tab in Windows mentioned above so you couldn't switch to your 3.5mm input which led me to this thread and then I worked it out.  So I thought I would join and share!

Its a Realtek HD Audio Manager software setting that needs to be changed.  It looks like the default install has a default option selected that causes this.

If you have the RealTek HD Audio Manager installed you will find it in control panel, open it.

If your can't find it in control panel, open windows explorer and look through your \Program Files\ for a \RealTek\ directory and look for the executable:

Eg: on my Win 7 64 bit OS:

C:\Program Files\Realtek\Audio\HDA\RAVCpl64.exe                (NB: Probably doesn't have the 64 in the name for a 32 bit OS)

Double click RAVCpl64.exe to open the RealTek HD Audio Manager

Now that you have RealTek HD Audio Manager opened, look for Device Advanced Settings. Click it.  In this windows form there is a Recording Device section. It has two options:

- Tie up same type of input jacks, i. e line in or microphone, as an input device.

- Separate all input jacks as independent input devices.

Change the selection to  Separate all input jacks as independent input devices and click OK.

You now have a separate line Input device being displayed in Windows Recording tab and you can use your 3.5mm input as intended.

Hope this helps  :)

GhettoBird:  Thanks but with Realtek HD Audio Manager open I can find no selection for "Device Advanced Settings".  Could you describe where you found that tab or button or menu selection and/or send a screenshot?

Hi Sailtronics,

I'm assuming my manager is an older version.  Main screen below shows top right Device Advanced settings as a web type link (URL).

and clicking on the above top right link Device Advanced Settings gives the following:

As you can see I have Separate all input jacks as independent input devices selected.

BTW, In "Programs and Features" under control panel, ie installed software I see "Realtek High Definition Audio Driver" as an install entry.

Hope this helps.

Same Problem.

Except, Line in is shown on the cpl (Realtek High Definition Audio Driver), and detects when a jack is plugged into the port, but no audio from my source (a pioneer cassette deck).  It had been working fine.  Windows shows the Line-in as the default but the level meter in the CPL shows no activity.

Any ideas?

Have a go with audacity audio editor https://www.audacityteam.org/ , has evry good support for taking sound from sources such as line-in and sending them elsewhere. I know people who've used it as a crude kind of oscilloscope to amost literally lusten to low voltage electrical signals.
