Need help with installing latest VMware Player on Linux Mint 17.1

Have been running VirtualBox for my Linux virtual machine needs for years, but time has passed, and so has my needs. I want my Windows 7 VM's to have better graphics, and in particular, better scores. 
 
A 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium VM in VirtualBox with 6GiB RAM assigned looks more like Home Basic (no Aero). Can be seen at the taskbar. If I wanted Home Basic, would have installed it. 
 

 
Ran across an article that showed how to install the latest VMware Player in Ubuntu 14.04, which Linux Mint 17 & 17.1 is based from, so it would seem that the install should go the same way. What am I doing wrong? Have already downloaded the VMware Player for Linux, as directed on the page.

On the other hand, these may be poorly constructed instructions, that I don't know. 
 
What I do know is that Linux users are using VMware Player in their computers, and I want the same. While VirtualBox is easier, VMware Player has been reported to provide better graphics to guests. In my case, hardware is not a limitation, and I want my VM's to have the look & feel of the native OS.

The one that I have is the latest for Linux 64 bit, version 7.0.0-230539x86_64 bundle.

Do it this way

Open terminal. And type

cd Downloads

Hit enter

 

and paste this in.

sudo sh VMware-Player-6.0.4-2249910.x86_64.bundle

It will start the installer.

Just got through updating the tools, had to enter my password for Firewall access, which was a first time for me, it was needed 5-6 times to complete.

Now you are on your own as I do not use it.

Because Cat has a latter version, to use it instead of the 1 I gave him he could

sudo sh VMware-Player- add your version here

Eg

sudo sh VMware-Player-7.0.0-230539x86_64 bundle.

"/location/to/the/file.bundle" is not a real file path,  it's just been used as an example.

 

It would really be something like "/home/Steve/Downloads/VMware-Player-6.0.4-2249910.x86_64.bundle"  Obviously substitute "Steve" for your own user account name and the Player version for whatever the version you have downloaded is.

 

I have used VMWare Player quite a bit and how I've always installed it is by opening a terminal at the location it's been downloaded to (or navigating to that location using the cd command) then typing:

sudo ./VMware-Player-6.0.4-2249910.x86_64.bundle

AFAIK it's exactly the same as using the "sh" command Nick has used, but just including for info.

 

I haven't had any issues with a firewall on it, so can't really help there.  I always do a full reboot after installing VMWare Tools.  The only issue I've ever had with it is on some OS's which don't install kernel headers and gcc by default (Mint not being one of them, I think it was OpenSUSE).  Just had to add all the necessary tools and kernel packages using the package manager and then retry, but it was a bit of a headache.

Yet another way is to use TAB autocomplete. As there is only one file in that directory beginning with 'V,' all you would have to do is type:

sudo ./V

..then hit TAB on your keyboard, and the terminal will complete the rest of the filename automatically.

have you tried to apt-get it?

 

you can try this:

 

A specific version of a package can be selected for installation by
following the package name with an equals (=) and the version of the package to select. This will cause that version to be located and selected for install. Alternatively, a specific distribution can be selected by following the package name with a slash (/) and the version of the distribution or the Archive name (i.e. stable, testing, unstable).

So this is saying to me you don't need the PPA to install the latest version but can instead do:
<package>=<version>

If that is so we don't need to add PPAs to our systems. IN other words PPAs are just a way to make it so that we are always running the latest version of the package regardless of if it works whereas we choose what we want to run with:
<package>=<version>
That is very Linuxy of them!
