From Macrumor Forum, I learn that:
iTunes only supports QuickTime and MPEG-4 Movie files that end in ".mov", ".m4v", or ".mp4" and are playable in QuickTime Player. In order to successfully import AVI to iTunes and then transfer AVI to iPad, AVI to iPhone, AVI to iPod, AVI to Apple TV, etc, converting AVI to iTunes recognized formats is an ideal way.
There are so many converters available online but before going to download or purchase, find out the best AVI to iTunes converter.
Hope it will help you more or less.

In fact, iTunes does not support AVI format. According to Apple official website, iTunes is only compatible with:
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.
You may try this easy method to transfer AVI to iTunes, iPad, iPhone, iPod.
By the way, this method helps me to successfully transfer any video like AVI, WMV, FLV, MPG, MKV etc to iTuens, iPad etc.
