ImgBurn is a very good little application.
  • Do ensure though, that when installing you are careful NOT to choose to install any crap (toolbars etc) along with it!

I just did a quick scan and the only discs I have available are DVD+R, that sufficient? I apologize if this question makes me seem a bit dull but entering into new territory here and I figure better now to get clarification than later.

AFAIK ... that will/should do the job: However, I cannot be sure.

The only thing I can suggest is that you try it.

I loaded puppy and I clicked on sda2 to mount it. I got the following message in an orangish box:

The ntfs-3g driver was unable to mount the NTFS partition and returned this error message:
ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to read NTFS $Bitmap: Input/output error
NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameteris very important! If the device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1).
Please se the 'dmraid' documentation for more details.
So, the inbuilt kernal NTFS driver has been used to mount the partition read-only

While I was reading it and copying the contents of the drive appeared.

I am looking around to see what exactly this means but if anyone has any input feel free to put it out there.

I was going to attempt running a chkdsk but I did not see the mount icon to unmount the drive before doing so. I right clicked on the mounted drive and selected run Pmount puppy drive mounter and now it has been sitting there saying "please wait, probing hardware"

Not sure if I should wait it out or what.

Let's try this ... ntfsfix ... after un-mounting sda2:
  • At the Puppy Desktop, click on Console.
  • At the prompt in the Console window, type:

    ntfsfix /dev/sda2

    Note the space after ntfsfix.
  • Press the <ENTER> key.
    What do you see on-screen?
FYI: See a case of success using ntfsfix

I havent been able to unmount sda2 yet. I didnt see the mount icon on the top left so I right clicked the sda2 drive icon on the bottom let and for some reason selected selected run pmount puppy drive monitor instead of unmount sda2 ( if currently mounted) and it says please wait, probing hardware.

there is still a green box with a little red x on the top right of it around the sda2 icon.

... the contents of the drive appeared.

In this "read only" state, you should be able to copy files to your external hard drive.
  • You will not be able to actually "write to"/make any changes to the hard drive itself.

From memory, that means sda2 is mounted.

From memory, to un-mount it:
  • Right-click on sda2 > Unmount.
I don't know exactly what you will need to do to stop/get out of the current attempt to use pmount.
  • You may even have to use the OFF button?
  • You will have to do it the best way you can, if waiting doesn't resolve the current "stuck" situation.

I would like to try the ntfs fix and run the chkdsk to see if it will fix the problem and boot normally before copying files but I can't seem to unmount at the moment. Not sure if I cicked something too many times and it is showing the please wait probing hardware message for the last 20 minutes.

also in a pink box it is saying

FAILURE!
One or more processes (programs) are currently using the partition. Here they are:

Kernel

If you press the "kill" button, Puppy will attempt to Kill the offending programs for you, only do this as a last resort.
Firstly you should try to close the programs manually, so do not press Kill please press the exit button.

Would it be ok to shut it down as is, mounted and all, and start over?

I don't know, and can't be sure.
  • It is possible that simply using the OFF button in this state may make the situation worse.

I suggest waiting patiently ... for ?2 hours to see what happens.
  • If nothing changes, KILL/OFF ... whatever is necessary and then try again.
