There is no logical reason for confusion here...unless the OP just happens to like that posture, IMO.  He has the right to not understand what has been well-explained, IMO...but that doesn't mean that members need continue stating the same basic points over and over.

As Louis has well said, we have tried to explain coherently.

As I understand it, your problem has to do with an apparent contradiction of Go The Power.

I asked this question because Go The Power, on 13 May 2015 - 12:04 AM, specifically said: It *shouldnt* affect your personal files, but it will remove your programs.

So what is so "quite clearly", his post or the link he referred me to that contradicts what he said ?

Unquote.

So I suggest you take this up directly with Go The Power since only that seems to be the bone of contention.

Bottom line is I finally got some free time, did the upgrade install and it does not seem to have affected anything adversely, and lo and behold sfc reports no integrity violations. There was a somewhat odd message on the last reboot of the upgrade: "Setup has determined that .NET Framework 4.5 is corrupt and must be repaired. I already asked Go The Power about the apparent contradiction but got no reply so no big deal, all's well that ends well. Thanks to all for the help. I am keeping a backup image for a while until I try everything just in case.

Update: A few things went whacko:

1 - Windows Update tried to install 180+ updates, around 95 of them failed, then after a restart it wanted to install 80+ more, which succeeded, then a few more, then some more. Now the update history shows a ton of updates as failed, most of which installed on the next run(s), The ones still showing as failed that did not install are:

(KB2510531)  - Failed - Security Update for Windows 7 - Manual Install shows as Not Applicable
(KB2598845)  - Failed - Internet Explorer 8 Compatibility View List for Windows XP - Manual Install shows as Not Applicable
(KB2685939)  - Failed - Security Update for Windows 7 - Manual Install shows as Not Applicable
(KB2703157)  - Failed - Update for Windows 7 - Manual Install shows as Not Applicable
(KB2718704)  - Failed - Update for Windows 7 - Manual Install shows as Not Applicable
(KB2729452)  - Failed - Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - Manual attempt - would not even download from MS
(KB2789645)  - Failed - Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - Manual attempt - would not even download from MS
(KB2836943)  - Failed - Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - Manual attempt - would not even download from MS
(KB2840149)  - Failed - Security Update for Windows 7 - Manual Install shows as Not Applicable
(KB3005607)  - Failed - Security Update for Windows 7 - Manual Install shows as Not Applicable
(KB3006226)  - Failed - Security Update for Windows 7 - Manual Install shows as Not Applicable
(KB3045999)  - Failed - Security Update for Windows 7 - Already Installed but I cannot find a record of a successful install

I now have 185 Installed Updates.

2 - AVG Internet Security - the firewall would not run ("error communicating with a driver) - fixed by uninstall and reinstall.

3 - Internet Explorer 11 would not install - fixed by manually getting all prerequisites and removing Internet Explorer 9.
