Hrd drives ok,..
you cant "refresh",win 7 the way you can,but you should be able to do a "non-destructive reinstall"?..
You want to reset the compuer, but keep files and programs,right?..
Did you look at Paperclips file link?..

I looked at the link from Paperclip and it looks like that might be the right mshta.exe fit in 64-bit versions of WIndows but what do you do with that file?
With 64-bit Windows there are two copies of many system files in two different places and they are usually not the same.
There will be one in here:
C:\Windows\System32
and another (completely different) one here:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64
So which one needs replacing or do they both need replacing and since they are not the same won't you need two files to download?
With systems after XP Microsoft increased the built in "protection" on most system files so you can't just replace the file by copying over the top of the current one or you will see an Access denied message something like this:
So before you can replace one or both files you should first make a copy of the one you have (in case you need to put it back), then you need to take ownership of the file(s), replace them, then restore the ownership back to the way it was before you started.
And for SFC to work and be happy you might also need to replace the file(s) in the Windows component "store" which is where Windows keeps copies of the files so SFC has a source to get a good copy if it finds something that needs to be replaced.
If you don't do all the right SFC will not be happy again.
I guess those instructions are forthcoming from somebody, right?
This is why I would go with the Sysnative solution... they know how to do all that stuff and the solution they send you will be sure it is all done right.
The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates.
Suggestions that begin with the word "try" are often wild goose chases. Try not. Do or do not. There is no try.
Does a suggestion that says "it's worth a try" and "let us know how it goes" instill confidence?
Reinstalling Windows should not count as a "solution".

There is a proper way to replace system files manually if need be,..
see what the op wants to do,...if we havnt lost him,..

Strange because as I said, with my previous (old) laptop I used the disks provided by DELL all the time to reinstall Windows elements That's a shame. I haven't had crashes in the past little while but today my desktop disappeared for a second or two. I'm not familiar with mshta and not sure what it does or doesn't do.. like I said, I'm not sure if it was relevant but the moderator told me to provide a log and that's when we discovered that it said corrupt. I can provide a minitoolbox report but someone would have to tell me how to go about pasting the correct info.
You want to reset the compuer, but keep files and programs,right?..- I was hoping just to repair that one thing if I could choose, but definitely would rather live with it if it's between that and a factory reset type of thing .
(sorry - I'm not sure which posts are directed towards me and which are to each other - I will do my best to answer what I know/can)
Thank you.

Hi Meshymee,.
josebara was talking about maintenace of your computer, but were going to do that anyway,as we go along,..
For the Minitoolbox log you can just paste in in you reply,..
When you run MiniToolBox,a text file will open,..just go to "edit",at the top right hand corner ,.
".select all"..then,edit again,.."copy",..and paste that into your next post,..
Important
Do you have bachups of your important files,..or can you make them?,..theres always some risk to files,
even if we Refresh and choose to keep your files
Please post Minitoolbox in your next reply,..then were can do some preperation to do a refresh,..thanks..

Thank you - I appreciate the scaled-down response. Today my display driver froze for a second. (attached).
Unfortunately I see no edit. Did you mean just click check all and select 'go'? (attached).
I have copies of my files but I've made a lot of tweaks on my computer and am hoping not to start from scratch..

Ok,good you,ve got backups,..important for study so as not to lose work,..:-)
First thing,..you could reinstall your Graphics driver, should stop it playing up again,..to do that,..
In the search box on the taskbar, enter device manager, then select Device Manager.
- Find the Display Adapter
- Right-click (or press and hold) the graphics driver, and select Uninstall.
- Restart your PC.
Windows will automatically reinstall the driver on reboot.
This link shows a tutorial,(you dont need to go get the driver from you vendor, just let windows reinstall it win it boots for now).Note:link for information only,..dont download anything.
https://www.intowindows.com/how-to-reinstall-the-display-driver-in-windows-10/
Then you can run MiniToolBox,,we dont need all the boxes ticked, just these...
Open the program >
Tick the boxes,
- list last ten event viewer errors
- installed programd
- nstalled programs, list users partitions and memory size.
Click "Go_,..
The program will run and open a txt file you can copy / paste into your next reply,..

I should clarify that I don't have a backup of my computer or disk image or anything like that, I have my personal files on an external hard drive.

should clarify that I don't have a backup of my computer or disk image or anything like that, I have my personal files on an external hard drive.
Ok,but you have backups of your files which is good,..ill look through MTB nd post back,..

Ok,.sorry for late reply,..caught up in work,...MTB doesnt actually look too bad, mostly irelivant errors i think,..
Lets try these before we try a reset,..
Run the Filechecker
Click Start
Type command prompt in search box
Right-click on the first item in search results list: Command Prompt
Click Run as administrator
When Command Prompt appears, type (copy / paste) ,the command:
sfc /scannow
Allow this to run and complete,it may take a while,..
Once it completes,restart the computer,..
As windows starts to boot, press the f8 key repeatedly to bring up the startup options > choose Last Known Good Configuration (advanced),
and then press Enter
Let the computer start as normal and see how it runs..

it was the filechecker result requested by the moderator that first brought the corrupt file to my attention and i'm still not sure if the corruption is the result of the malware, the removal or neither (and was like that before all of this).
i've attached a scan result but sadly no longer remember if this was a screenshot i sent the moderator before or after it was fixed (or which program it's from but i've attached it anyway in case it's relevant.)
i'm running it now but i don't have a problem starting so i wouldn't really be able to tell you if there was a change.. but i'll let you know if i notice anything.
the only problem (well, there are a lot of little ones but no others that began after the removal) was the occasional windows explorer crash.
*i restarted.. not sure how to tell.

Ok,..monitor computer for a bit,..see how it does..
It would be helpfull to look through the latest filechecker log ,..you can run this command in command prompt,..it,ll put a copy of the log on your desktop, that you can paste into your next reply,..
open command,..type,(copy / paste).
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfclogs.txt"
Dont know about missing file,..sometimes virus removal causes issues,..this doesnt seem too bad,..even if we do a reset, its not that difficult really,..if you really dont want to do that, the file can be reinstalled manually,..
did you boot into, last known good configuration?..
Try Clearing File Explorer History to help with the crashes,..
type File Explorer Options in Windows 10 search bar and click on the result
Open File Explorer Options,..
Click "Clear" in the Privacy section (bottom right)..
Ok,..let me know how it goes,..and post the log for FChecker,if you can..

yes, hard to keep up..
i did do last known and i don't have the crash all the time so hard to tell. the only diff i see since doing it is that my browser is a bit screwy. today and yesterday the browser works fine but for some reason i can't close a tab by clicking x. and tabs seem to be on top of each other. i had to right click to close tabs but couldn't drag a tab into a bookmark folder - doing so made it go on top of another. i could make a new tab though so it was like tabs half-froze? never had that before). image attached.
re: clearing file explorer history - i searched i the search bar (yes, W7) and it doesn't come up - not sure how to do it on 7.
re: Dont know about missing file,..sometimes virus removal causes issuesif you really dont want to do that, the file can be reinstalled manually,.. - is this what caused the desktop crashes? is it a required file?
re: post the log for FChecker,if you can - i can redo it and post pls remnd me where to fibd the result log.
thanks
