Take a look at this thread. I downloaded and installed the latest Windows Update Agent, Client, and KB3102810. Still nothing. I still have the Windows Update Service disabled or I get 50% CPU usage on svchost. This is definitely a Microsoft Windows 7 issue.

Update the Windows Update Client to the latest version https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3138612

It says "searching updates on this computer" or something like that, when attempting to install KB3138612 x64. I couldn't even cancel the process after waiting for a long time. So I had to restart my computer.

Before installing press  Windows7_key_R2.png and type: services.msc click Ok
locate the Windows Update Service right click and click Stop then install the update.

Oh sorry, thanks. The installation ran successfully. Waiting for getting updates now.

Update the Windows Update Client to the latest version https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3138612

Did that. Still no success. Will enable the Windows Update Service this morning and try searching again.

The CPU usage didn't lower?

No, I just enabled Windows Update in Services and svchost proceeded to use 50% CPU. I initially installed Windows Client KB3135445. When that didn't seem to solve the issue I installed KB3138612.

Ok, thanks. Seems it works better on fresh installs...

Same issue on a Windows 7 desktop only svchost is using 25% CPU on a quad core vs 50% CPU on the dual core laptop.

Installing KB31386212 didn't help. Same behaviour as before even though my Windows 7 is "nearly" fresh. This was the "second round" with updates in one month.

After approx an hour the Windows 7 desktop found updates and is currently installing them. Of note, the desktop did not require the latest update agent, client, or KB3102810.

The laptop is still running svchost at 50% CPU

Edit: Updates for desktop were selected and allowed to install but update install is still stuck at 0%.

That's where I'm at right now. Windows Update has been disabled once again.

Feck you, Microsoft.

Check this post. It solved my problem of not getting updates.

So I installed KB3145739, rebooted my computer, checked for updates.

Same problem as before. Windows Update is disabled, once more.

Have you tried running the Windows Update Readiness Tool?

I tried it the other day and it kept hanging for over an hour. Then I tried canceling it and it got stuck and I had to force restart my computer. But I guess it's worth another shot...

Thanks for sticking with me this far. Seems like everyone's problems have been resolved except for mine (in so many ways).
