You don't delete an email account from an email client like Outlook or Thunderbird by selecting and deleting messages and folders.  This action synchronizes to the email server and to all other computers using the email account.

You delete an account from an email client by going to the client's account settings.  This action removes the email databases and account information from only the one computer without sending any delete commands to the server.

As for recovering deleted messages from Thunderbird, some websearching reveals there are ways of doing this as long as the database files still exist after having performed message deletion and so long as compacting was never performed and the computer is kept disconnected from the Internet during the process.  It's kind of a complicated process, though, and there are still no guarantees.

Another possibility would be to look or some utility program to do the same thing.

SaaS software: Thunderbird Recovery Tool

I have no experience with it, so I can't vouch for whether it works, but the trial version is free, so you don't have much to lose. Again, I highly recommend backing up your email profile folders before using any unknown tools on them.

Thanks guys, I'll have a little dabble and see what happens. Although, the loss of some details and passwords in folders etc might not be the real worry. After all it isn't like she lost money. My major concern is the fact that one PC can delete things from another PC, it's a bit like scamming.

You sound like a guy who knows what he's talking about. However, if I knew what you know then I wouldn't be on here seeking help, from guys like you who know more than me, would I?

I thought that this was going to be a breeze to sort out. Just delete the email from a machine we hadn't used for years and job done. But in the real world nothing is ever that easy is it. However if you want to wade in and give me some usefull advice. I'll be pleased to receive what you have. But don't patronise me, just remember we all have strengths and weaknesses. You have yours and I have mine. One day you might be knocking on my door for help.

I'm struggling to understand what's offensive about that quote. It was simply a statement of fact.

Hi Shplad

Struggle no more. As it stands, yes you would be right in considering BeigeBochs remark as being nothing more than a helpfull suggestion. And if I had come to Bleeping Computer with a question such as...

My wife has her email account on two separate PC's. Would it be OK for me to just delete the one that is nolonger required, without any problems?

His answer then would be considered by me, as helpfull. But telling me what I should have done, after I had waded in and and made a pigs ear of the whole situation. His remark now is like rubbing salt in the wound. But I can understand how you and maybe others wouldn't be happy with my initial response. So to that effect, I can say...I'll bear that in mind, for future refference.

Mike

HopefullOne, I'm sorry you lost valuable information when working to clean up one of your computers, but you asked:

Hi Allen

"just delete the account from Thunderbird. It will ONLY delete it from Thunderbird on that system."

So why when I was deleting the files and folders from the Lenovo (Thunderbird) account was it also simultainiously wiping them ftom her laptop  (Outlook), and what's worse BT as well!?

And I answered.  You seemed to want an explanation, so I provided one. I wasn't patronizing you, just trying to help.

Sorry, I missed that question. In an imap account, deleting email or folders is universal (across all clients). But properly deleting an email account is local (it only effects the one system / client).
