Why does Windows Defender' s full scan takes so long I have to cancel it

Well I'm 8.5 hours into full scan and it is only half completed. This seems to be a generic 'problem' with Windows Defender as opposed to anything specific or  a malfunction. It just takes a long time in Full mode. Period. (and I do note that you are warned of this by the program itself in the scan window before you start and throughout).

No, it doesn't hang or get stuck in any folders, nor does it take a longer time in any specific system area,  again, it just plods along at its own pace regardless. Perhaps it is just being thorough?

That's why it is recommended to perform a Quick Scan instead of a Full one. Generally, a Full scan is only necessary when your system is showing signs or symptoms of infection.
