Good Morning,
I don't know if you have resolved your problem or not but there may be a couple of more otions to try...First open up the link that Barster posted for you previously and run that script...It will tell you exactly what is on your system and drivers and other goodies. Once it is loaded, click on the sounds tab...Click on the Test button...It will run several sound options asking you whether you are able to hear it or not...Answer each one with Yes or No...At the end save the information to your desktop or some other place of your choice...It will be saved as a text file...You can post it here and I'd be glad to look it over for you.
Second, If you know someone (that you fully trust)...A family member, close friend, co-worker, IT department (company that you work for) or good neighbor you can ask for remote assistance by following the directions found in the help center...Start>Help and Support>Ask for remote assistance...It's included in XP...Free...and relative painless to set up...What it will do is allow the person that you trust access to your desktop where they can look thru your system and see if they can find anything wrong that you may have missed...If you contact microsoft for assistance this is what their techs will do but it may cost you $60.00.
I tried for quite some time last night to try and do things to my system to make it act like yours but I couldn't get mine to do what yours is doing. I won't be available to mess around in here today, but will check back in later this evening to see if anything has improved for you...
Good Luck,
Doug
