Thanks for your replys. I have heard back from HP but not really keen on their 3rd suggestion. Might have to go for a sound card to slot in rather than trying to repair the internal one now.

This is what i got back from HP:

Hi MC

I understand from your email that you own an HP pavilion t760.uk desktop Computer and you are having issue with the sound. I also see that you have reinstalled the audio driver and uninstalled winamp as the issue started after installing some update for the same.

Your email has reached the technical support division for North Americas, where we can provide technical assistance to the customers worldwide. However, we will not be able to carry out shipment or replacements outside the United States. If the unit requires a service, shipment, replacement or an escalation, you will have to contact your local Phone Support Number. We regret the inconvenience this may cause to you.

As per the warranty rules, you will be able to get a replacement only in the country of purchase. Your warranty is within the jurisdiction of the region that you purchased your product in. I regret the inconvenience this may cause to you but I will surely look forward in assisting you further.

MC, I know that you have performed some troubleshooting steps, however, the issue still persists. I request you to refer the following web link and perform all the troubleshooting steps and check the result.

== Resolving Sound Problems ==

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documen...;product=436536

If the issue still persists, please perform the following steps.

1. Click Start and then Run.
2. Type dxdiag in the box and click Ok. Then, please click Yes.
3. This will open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window.
4. Click Music tab and then click TestDirectMusic and then you should hear a music coming from the system. Click Ok to discontinue the music.
5. Click Sound tab and then click TestDirectSound and then click Yes and now you should hear a sound coming from the computer.

If you are able to hear the sound/music from this DirectX Diagnostic tool, then it states that the audio driver is working fine. Hence, the issue might be with the application from which you are trying to play/hear a song/music.

If you are unable to hear any music/sound from the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, then please visit the weblink given below to download and install the Audio drivers for your computer. Click on Download only to save the file onto your computer and then double-click the downloaded file to install onto your computer.

MC, if the issue still persists, I recommend you to perform a non-destructive recovery.

By doing a Non Destructive, you will not lose any data other than "My Documents" folder. You may create a new folder under My Computer > C Drive and copy all the important files there before starting the process. But all the programs that were not preinstalled in the computer will be lost.

You may need to reinstall any third-party software that was not shipped with the computer.

==== Non Destructive Recovery ====

CAUTION: If extra hard drives have been added to the HP Pavilion, disconnect the IDE and power cable from the back of the
extra drive before performing a system recovery to
prevent data loss on the new drive.

If Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) has been or
will be installed, download and install the SP1 software
patch to prevent boot up issues. Refer to the "Download
SP1 software patch" section below.

There are two options to perform a full recovery. These two options
are listed below.

Option 1: Recovering the system from the Windows XP Desktop

CAUTION: A destructive recovery will format the hard drive. This
will delete all the information on the hard drive and
reinstall Windows XP and the original software that came
with the computer.

1. Disconnect all peripherals and internal non preinstalled devices
from the PC, except the monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
2. From the Windows XP Desktop, click Start, All Programs, and then HP Tools.
3. Select HP PC System Recovery. The Recovery screen will open with the question "Do you really want to start HP PC System Recovery?"
4. Click Yes, to continue the recovery process.
5. When the Recovery screen opens, click Next, and then click Yes to perform a normal, non-destructive recovery.

Option 2: Recovering the system without using Windows

1. Disconnect all peripherals and internal non preinstalled devices
from the PC, except the monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
2. Turn on the computer.
3. When the initial blue HP screen opens, press the F10 key repeatedly until a recovery menu appears. The progress indicator that first appears does not indicate that a recovery is taking place. The progress indicator represents the time before the recovery process is started.
4. When the Recovery screen opens, click Next, and then click Yes to perform a normal, non-destructive recovery.

After the System Recovery is complete, and the computer starts
successfully, update the computer software by visiting the Web sites
below:

Hi everyone.

I would just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who had tried to help me with this problem. :inlove:

This is a closing post to say that i gave up trying to fix the problem after all attempts had failed, and that i wasn't feeling what HP suggested in doing a non-destructive recovery. Too much to possibly lose.

So i opted for the save idea of getting a new sound card. I got a soundblaster live followed the instructions givin by HP to install and all is working fine now. :flowers:

:trumpet: Internal soundcard

Once again thank you to all that have tried to help me resolve my problem.

MC

Sorry to hear that you had to replace the sound card, but it's nice to hear that you got your sound back. :flowers:

Thanks for letting us know you got it working, many people don't. :trumpet:
