Question? whats the main reason members go dormant? when I first started Folding@home I had set up the client with BC team # and my name and it seemed like was working no problem, the icon in task bar showed it was working all was good. From time to time I would check on my points after a couple of months went by, I went to Kakao stats web page to check on my progress and was surprised to see my name was greyed out even though my icon in the task bar showed it was working. I had to reconfigure my name and BC team # again ,don't know what happened because it was working at first and at some point it reset it self to default setting, but if I didn't check I would have never have known about it.Don't know how many WU I didn't credit for but now I just check on a regular basis, its never happened again so its more than likely its something I did . Cheers

Here's maybe why? Their Ram takes hissey fit and say's goodnight Irene, "Adios Amego"? They get a new system and don't reinstall client?
Stop running client due too lack of interest and participation by others, no buzz?

Personally I'd built two systems just to run it but after frying so many GPUs I simply got tired and couldn't afford to replace them. I've run pretty solidly for over a year with a few minor breaks here and there but another issue is not hearing or seeing any of the results.

Thanks for replying,I totally see your point there must be lots of stories like yours, especially when you consider that there's 87 members and only 5 active, pretty sad too say the least! :(

GPU's get you the highest amount of points in the quickest time alloted depending upon your CPU also.
I, at one point, was running 2 AMD 1090 x6 processors. One machine had the ATI 6970 (toasted) and then replaced with a nVidia 550Ti (semi-toasted). The other machine featured a nVidia 560Ti (semi-toasted). When both were running full time (CPU's) overclocked to 3.72Ghz, I was averaging about 1.3 - 1.5 million points per month. Great numbers but the GPU's will only last about 6-8 months at best.
While we do see an increase in our points progress, and can see the projects we're actually working on, the lack of progress shown by medical progress is disheartening. I folded for another group but I think these two issues are important to the people who are actually folding regardless of what team or group they're folding for. At least in my case, I wanted to see what difference my efforts were making.
About a year or so ago, there was a story about the breakthrough progress in the AIDS/HIV discoveries by another type of gaming process used to do something similar to what folding@home does. What REAL progress is folding making?

I'm still folding a year and a half later. Admittedly, I took a 4-5 month break but I'm back at it again. Folding@home has made some impressive leaps and bounds in that short time period I was off with better engine utilization and the easy ability to see your actual proteins folding without causing a rapid increase of power drain from your GPU which was an issue long ago.
They've also added an small link to what you're actually working on too which to me matters.

I would hope that for those that drop out for whatever reason, be it lack of interest, electrically cost or machine sharing, we have others who are signing up to replace them. I think it's important and having lost my best friend to brain cancer almost 15 yrs ago at the age of 31 it has personal meaning to me. I also lost my mother 2 yrs ago due to a combination of brain and lung cancer. Potentially we are all going to be touched personally by the work we're doing covering Cancers, Diabetes, Influenza, Alzheimers, medicinal research, etc. whether it's ourselves, a family member or a close personal friend. While I may not have the training to create that miracle medical breakthrough on my own, I can play an even bigger part in what I am educationally unable to do by using my computer as a substitute for my inabilites.

This is probably the most selfless act of humbleness you can offer to others. We have the ability to touch the lives of hundreds of thousands and even millions of people without having to lift a finger by just allowing our extra processing power to figure out the cures for everyones benefit!

On behalf of my best friend, my mother and myself, thank you to all of you who fold :)!

Sleepwalker, now that it is not in the summer I can run Folding. Basically, in the summer it is really expensive to run due to cooling requirements. Whereas I basically don't need to pay for heat now.

Life's been going pretty well :) You?

BTW, don't forget to setup a pass key. The huge difference you see starting on October 13 is just from adding a pass key (and becoming eligible for the quick return bonus): http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=321690 .

Well I'm back to folding too. Not sure how long my machine can handle the increased load though, we'll see. Still running version 6 though. I might upgrade to version 7 after this WU is done. So we should be passing CC sooner rather than later.

Billy can't complain, been a great summer and so far fall has been good as well, it was getting down to only a couple of us left Folding I'm glad to see more Members now returning. I know what your talkin about with the increased load,(w/FahCore 0x17) Bleepin Elf and by the way it's great to have you back too :welcome:, every WU gets us closer  to our goal. And yes a pass key is a good thing for security and the bonus points for early return don't hurt either.  Wayne

What is this folding. I take it as some form of computer talk. I have never heard of it before. Simple explanation please.
