Stick with any of the well-known names and you will be fine.  Go to Amazon or Newegg and check the users' reviews for any brand you are considering.

If you have an old PC.

Take the Hard Drive out of it > Put it in an "Enclosure" > Format it > Wow - You have an External HDD for 10% of the price.

So long as you have a 3 Copy System, the failure of a Drive is not a major problem.

Simple 3 Copy System - (1) The Drive in your PC - (2) An external backup (say weekly) - (3) Another External Backup (say monthly).

If you PC is critical to a Business, then your Backups could be daily and weekly, instead.

+1 with what Eddie said, post #2.  These old HDDs can be found, just wipe them and format in NTFS. I use a docking station, and I can pop in&out different drives for storage of different data.

Pretty much any brand which is sold directly by a retailer like Walmart, Best Buy, Amazon, or Newegg is fine.  What you need to be wary of are products by marketplace sellers on these platforms, especially products with fantastic capacities (6TB or more) with impossibly low prices compared to what the big retailers are selling.  For example, avoid 10TB drives that are posted for less than $100 USD.

How much space do you need? How much do you want to spend?

I have an Lexar 2TB Armor 700 Portable SSD it holds enough data for most people, is high speed and you don't have to worry about dropping it.

If you need more space and speed isn't an issue Seagate Expansion drives are good.
