This is my backup phone and not my primary phone.  Battery health is very low and needs a new battery.  Even when I charge it to 100%, the phone is basically unusable and freezes all the time.  Then batteries go to 0% in minutes.

Apple no longer replaces the battery.  Years ago I did this but the battery has been bad since then.

I know you can buy a new battery on Amazon or eBay but those are not good?  The other issue is I have no experience replacing a phone battery myself.  From what I read, this takes an hour or more and you have to be careful.  Has anyone who done this have any experience?  I do notice ifixit has a battery replacement and its 25 dollars for the battery and 30 dollars with the battery and the tools.  Standard shipping is $5.  So it would cost $32 or $37 for the battery.  If you want a phone repair shop to replace the battery for you, I got to assume it will cost at least $30 to $50 or more right?  So you are paying $62 to $90 or so to replace the battery?  The thing is some iphone SE used sold on eBay similar to mine cost around $65 so it would be like the same price as buying a used iPhone SE.  My iPhone SE is unlocked and so are the ones on eBay.  I know the IOS you can't use the latest one as well.  The thing is I do like this phone but can't use it due to the battery.

Anyone have advice on this?  Now if I know how to replace the battery, I would do that.  But since I have no experience, what should I do here?  The thing is you can easily break the phone if you do it wrong right?

Now if I'm going to a repair shop for it, I got to assume I don't even need to pay extra for the tools since the shop would have those things?  Has anyone replaced the iphone battery for an old iPhone like this?  Now if I buy a new android phone but a cheap one that is unlocked, that still cost $100 or so and tax right?  I prefer apple and want to continue using this phone as my backup phone.

As it also can not run Updates past iOS 15.8.5,. there a bout's there is no Support for this.

Would it not be wiser to buy a cheaper phone where you get security updates and more ? Such as a Samsung maybe.

The iPhone SE was discontinued by Apple on September 12, 2018 and Support for the phone Ended : 31 Mar 2025

Yes I know it doesn't do updates over that.  Is that a big issue though?

The thing is this is my backup spare phone though  This isn't my main phone.

So it isn't worth it then to get a battery replacement?  If I could buy it online and do it myself, I do that but no experience with replacing battery on a phone and it does not seem simple as it shows this on ifixit.  This isn't a simple thing to do.  I don't want to buy a used iPhone SE unlocked on eBay either because the battery of it for sure is going to be not good.

IMHO it is not worth spending the money on a battery.

It would be better to find someone that wants to buy the phone and use that money and the battery money you were going to spend towards another phone.

Possibly Samsung if wanting to save money though the top stuff goes for 1000's as well as iPhone.

A backup phone. then all you need is a cheap phone.  I do not know any people that have backup phones.

You are talking about 2017 technology. Almost 9yrs ago.  Buy a cheap phone that suits the purpose of a backup which is contacts and ability to make a call or text.

So when Apple declared on 31 Mar 2025 it was no longer supported that included sales of the battery.

If call a iPhone store and see if it is possible to get one, they were around $69.00 but .........  Call a store, then look elsewhere.
